With many new launches in the automobile industry among the electric vehicle segment, Hybrids hybrids to act as a bridge in the shift towards EVs. Naman Chopra, Founder and CEO, Rexnamo Automotive takes a look at challenges and opportunities in electric passenger vehicles (PVs).
What challenges have you observed in electric passenger cars?
Electric passenger cars will be a promising segment in India but it will take some time. Developing an electric vehicle is what Indian companies are doing currently. Support infrastructure like battery and charging infrastructure is a big challenge. Another major challenge is price or the cost. Many across the globe are working on the technology for better batteries which are affordable, fast charging, and efficiently utilises power etc areas. On a positive note, though electric vehicles will take time to pick pace, hybrids are the area that is supposed to rescue the market.
What improvements do you suggest in the electric passenger car batteries today?
There is lot to explore in electric passenger car segment. Batteries today have come a long way from just 50 km range to around 200-400 km range. It is pertinent to mention here that the primary cost of EVs is of its battery. Old lithium batteries take a long time to charge and which will require a network of charging stations across the globe.
Graphene, you might have heard, is a promising ingredient in battery technology which promises fast charging times and high energy storage. But you might have noticed that not many companies are actually bringing it to the market. Rexnamo is one of the first, if not the first, to bring a commercially successful product which uses graphene. We combine that with a hydrogen fuel cell range extender for going on long distances. With this, you don’t need charging stations spread throughout the city. Aditionally, saves millions of dollars in infrastructure costs, which many of the competitors basically waste.
Do you source components or you manufacture it? Are EV components available at ease?
Yes EV components are available easily. However, more options should be there in the market for a better product and lower prices. Component prices are higher in some components while basic components like cables and wires are available at ease and at regular prices. Some big companies also have developed key components at their own facilities. Component manufacturers need to upgrade to more advance materials on studying the new demand of electric vehicles.
What are some current market trends in electric passenger cars?
Current trends in electric passenger cars suggest that demands are low. Adoptions have increased considerably in two and three wheelers. We do 500 vehicles per quarter right now which is a mix of two-wheelers, electric-cars and electric-buses. E-cars and E-buses are retrofitted. Hybrids are growing with automakers releasing their products. It is better for automakers to launch hybrids as it will not affect much of their manufacturing processes. Hybrids will buy threshold time for automakers to shift towards E-passenger cars.
We manufacture two-wheeler scooters with lithium-ion batteries and also retrofit existing cars to convert them to electric at a fraction of cost of buying the same e-vehicles from a manufacturer/OEM.
Which new products are developed by you? Tell us about your future plans.
Apart from our full range of electric scooters and motorcycles, we are developing E-Car and E-SUV using other brand’s chassis. For us this is a workable business model. We have launched our motorcycles and scooters which have performed well. Soon we will be looking at launching our electric cars which is supposed to experience a price drop in the years to come. This will only happen if we see some exciting new technology breakthroughs for batteries, raw material drivetrain.
What are new technologies that you have installed your vehicles?
When sourcing a component becomes difficult, we consider manufacturing it in our in-house facility located in Ghaziabad. We have included some automation in our manufacturing process and the recent add on is that of 3D printing. Some body parts for our two-wheelers are manufactured over the same. It helps to manufacture on-demand and compared to metal the part is light-in-weight.
